Thompson of Marion, Iowa served with the 20th Iowa Infantry regiment during the Civil War. He was appointed Major on August 1, 1862. In December 1862 he was severely wounded at Prairie Grove, Arkansas and on May 18, 1864 he resigned from service. From the description of William G.
